Convoy

convoy truckHave you ever been in a convoy? You know, a group of 2 or more cars following each other, going to the same place. Well, that was the case last week as the N-Dub staff drove to Catalyst. I happened to be the driver in the lead car. So, I did what any true NASCAR fan would do, I drove like I was in a race. You have to be aggressive! Have you ever been in Atlanta traffic? Fun is not a word that comes to mind.

So over the week, I bobbed and weaved my way thru Georgia traffic, with my team behind me. I had the Turn by Turn GPS, great driving skills, and I was the leader.  At least that’s what I thought. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Everywhere I went, I left my team behind, I didn’t signal, and I drove like I was in a high speed chase. See, my problem was is I might have been the lead car but I was not leading.

You can’t lead if people can’t keep up with you because you’re moving too fast. People can’t follow you if they don’t know where you’re going. Just because you know where you’re going doesn’t mean they do.  Being a leader is not about being in front, it’s about leading, and if people can’t see you because your 20 miles down the road, you’re not leading.

Great thoughts! I love this line:

People can’t follow you if they don’t know where you’re going.

It’s all about communication and vision!! Amen and Amen!

Awesome stuff. We as leaders, must make sure our followers can follow.

My mentor told me this as a 25yr. old leader w/ major responsibilities. “Scott you are always ahead of your team, you have to be patient even at the expense of them bumping their head.”

Good stuff my friend. Bringing the truth. I know as a young leader sometimes you just have to slow down. Its not that your stopping or that you will be stuck “waiting on others” but its better to have a army going into battle than to try and go William Wallace style by yourself. :0)

Vince Parker you are a great leader. A scary driver (haven’t gone that fast since my teens) but a great leader. You are only a leader if people are following you.
